Sheila Gibbs (nee Fairgrieve) qualified as a physiotherapist from Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh in 1984 and worked in various fields of medicine in Carlisle and Glasgow before coming to Dundee in 1988 where she specialized in orthopaedics. In 1992 she undertook a Master of Science Degree by research in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Dundee, whilst working in the Gait Analysis Laboratory based at the Dundee Limb Fitting Centre. She became a state registered Clinical Scientist in 1995 and managed a national clinical gait analysis service. The laboratory moved to new premises at Ninewells Hospital in 1999, and in 2003 it amalgamated with the Foot Pressure Analysis Lab/Clinic to become part of The Institute of Motion Analysis and Research (IMAR).

Sheila completed her PhD in 2014 at the University of Dundee. She is currently involved in the management of children with cerebral palsy as well as contributing to the many and varied motion based research projects within the Institute. Sheila Chaired the Clinical Movement Analysis Society from 2012 to 2014 and continues to be an active member of the group which strives to drive up standards and promote the development of expertise in the field.

Sheila Gibbs is a Consultant Clinical Scientist in The Institute of Motion Analysis and Research whose main goal is to promote excellence in teaching and research and to provide a comprehensive clinical service in the fields of Motion Analysis and Biomechanics. The research focuses on important aspects of daily activities in relation to posture, movement and ergonomics, with emphasis placed on sports and disability. The overall aim is to alleviate pain, correct deformity and enhance performance. Over 150 conference papers have thus far been presented at national and international conferences as an outcome of the research undertaken by our MChOrth, BMSc, PhD, MD and MSc students at IMAR.
