FASt Talker 2015!

Professor Rami Abboud (Institute of Motion Analysis & Research) was an invited guest speaker at the 7th Annual meeting of Foot & Ankle Scotland (FASt) which took place on the 25th of September 2015 at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The theme of this year’s meeting was sports-related foot and ankle problems which are Professor Abboud’s specialist areas of clinical research. The talk was entitled Foot & Ankle Biomechanics: Art, Science or both? Where is the problem? The lectured focussed on footwear biomechanics as an important variable that is affecting athletes in general and the effect footwear has upon injury. The lecture created a lot of debate engaging all attendees into realising that what is perceived may not be reality and what is reality may not be applicable drawing on Professor’s Abboud vast expertise in foot and ankle biomechanics and motion analysis.

The meeting was very well attended and gathered together orthopaedic surgeons, podiatrists, orthotists, physiotherapists and nurses with a special interest in foot and ankle pathologies. Other guest speakers included Dr Niall Elliott (Head of Sports Medicine, sportscotland institute of sport), Dr Andrew Murray (Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine), Mr Bill Taylor (Clinical Director of Taylor Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic) and Mr Anthony Sakellariou (Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon).

FASt is a multidisciplinary group that was set up to provide an educational forum for foot and ankle orthopaedics across all disciplines in Scotland. This is the first multidisciplinary group of its kind and uniquely, brings together the disciplines of orthopaedics and podiatry as well as a number of other disciplines.

“It was an impressive gathering of a multidisciplinary group of clinicians that are interested in the foot and ankle, its management, protection and prevention of injury. The host, Mr Hisham Shalaby, current president of FASt, created a vibrant environment to exchange knowledge and experience and I was privileged to be invited by him as a guest speaker”, stated Professor Abboud.
