Hip/Knee Dry-bone Workshop

Master of Orthopaedic Surgery (MCh Orth) students today (29th April 2016) attended and participated in a practical Dry-bone Workshop on Hip and Knee Replacement delivered by Mr David Nicoll, Consultant Lower Limb Orthopaedic Surgeon. Mr Nicoll runs and delivers this full-day workshop annually at the Cuschieri Skills Centre in conjunction with Zimmer Biomet.

The workshop took the form of lectures and practising hip and knee replacement on Sawbones models. Assistance and support was provided by Stephen Woods from Zimmer Biomet and Dr Dhiraj Marothi (Senior Consultant Knee Replacement Surgeon).

Mr Nicoll stated: “It is always a pleasure to run this workshop with the orthopaedic surgeons on the MCh (Orth) course. The lectures covered the basic principles of THR and TKR including patient selection, choice of implants and surgical techniques. The students enjoyed practising cemented and hybrid hip replacements and a Nexgen LPS TKR”.

This workshop once again highlights the diverse range of learning opportunities available to students studying on the MCh (Orth) Dundee course at the University of Dundee. Such dry-bone workshops expertly run in conjunction with lectures, hands-on cadaveric surgery workshops, research skills and clinical attachment for the course duration only go to emphasise that studying an MCh (Orth) in Dundee is a unique opportunity for all orthopaedic surgeons.
