Sir James Mackenzie Prize Nominees

Erin Frizzell, an Intercalated BMSc student studying at the Department of Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery, presented her research for the Sir James Mackenzie Prize at the Tanis Drummond Lecture Theatre on 8 June 2017. The session was chaired by Professor Faisel Khan, Co-Lead for the Intercalated Degree Programme at the School of Medicine.

A total of 13 of the best and brightest from the intercalated 2016/17 students’ BMSc batch from the School of Medicine were chosen to give podium presentations in recognition of their excellence in research.

Erin’s research topic and presentation were entitled “A comparison of branded rugby head guards on their effectiveness in reducing impact on the head”, was supervised by Dr Tim Drew. Erin recently presented her research along with three other students from the Department of Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery, at the 15th International Conference on Clinical Biomechanics at Staffordshire University Campus University, Stoke-on-Trent on May 4-6th, 2017.

Erin is already a double award winner at the TORT Centre, winning the best Scientific Paper Award and the best Presentation Skills Award. The first award is given to the BMSc student who has written the best scientific research paper submission for the year as per the relevant journal guidelines. The second award is presented to the student who gives the best PowerPoint presentation and designs the best scientific poster.

Professor Rami Abboud, Associate Dean for Learning & Teaching, Head of Postgraduate Division, stated: “I would like to congratulate all the presenters for their excellent and informative oral presentations. The level of research displayed and the professional manner in which they disseminated their work just goes to highlight the excellent intercalated programme that we have at the University of Dundee and strengthen the outstanding efforts of staff across the medical school to support, guide and teach these students. It is a great honour just being nominated to present for this prestigious award so in my eyes you are all winners!

The 2017 Sir James Mackenzie Prize was awarded jointly to Alex Christmas and Erin Frizzell and presented to them by the Dean, Professor Gary Mires, at the Medical School Prize Giving Ceremony on Friday 23 June 2017.
