39th Annual Conference of MP Indian Orthopaedic Association 2021

Mr Arpit Jariwala (UDOTS Director & Consultant Upper Limb and Trauma Surgeon) was an invited Guest Faculty and was requested to deliver the prestigious Professor O.P. Sharma Oration at the 39th MP-IOACON on 16-17th October 2021.

Mr Jariwala gave a talk and discussion on “Is it now time to retire Hook Plates in the management of acromioclavicular joint dislocations?

Mr Jariwala explained and posed the question to delegates regarding Hook Plate usage as they require removal at three-four months post-op necessitating further surgical intervention, further time off work for the patient and a significant percentage continue to require further treatment. Ligament reconstruction with tendon grafts or synthetic ligaments look more desirable as they have comparable outcomes to Hook Plate stabilisation and have the benefit of a single intervention. Mr Jariwala discussed the surgical technique and outcome results whilst highlighting some surgical cases (see picture below).

The conference this year was held in Bhopal, the City of Lakes, which is currently being developed as a smart city and the cleanest capital city in India.

Mr Jariwala commented:

“It was a great honour being asked to present the Professor O.P. Sharma Oration at this year’s conference, even though it was 6:00am Dundee time. The event was extremely well run with a fantastic array of talented speakers over the two days. With the COP26 Summit being held in Scotland in a few weeks, it is a timely reminder that we can all lower our carbon footprints by attending such conferences remotely using the technology we have all become familiar with during the COVID pandemic.”
