Paediatric Spinal Surgery Workshop at UDOTS

Mr Thanos Tsirikos gave a series of spinal lectures to students studying the MCh (Orth) at the University Department of Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery (UDOTS) on Friday 10 March 2023.

Mr Tsirikos is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children, where he has worked since 2004. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He previously worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and completed his Fellowship at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Sick Children in Delaware, USA.

Professor Arpit Jariwala, UDOTS Director and MCh (Orth) programme lead, commented:

“I’d like to thank Thanos for leading this valuable session and for his continued support of UDOTS teaching programmes. It was great for the students to gain F2F teaching in this session again after the last couple of years of remote sessions. Thanos, like the rest of our teaching faculty, gives his time and experience freely and we are fortunate at UDOTS to be able to draw on experts in their fields from all over the world to teach on our courses. Our students are always appreciative of our talented and diverse orthopaedic teaching faculty.

This year was unique as we were able to use bone models to do pedicle screw placement which is excellent learning being taught by Mr Tsirikos. I would like to thank DePuy Synthes for their support in supplying the surgical kit and bone models. Student feedback has been extremely positive.”

STUDENT FEEDBACK

“Spine workshop was an effective way to provide hands-on training and experience in spinal pedicle screw fixation techniques. This workshop provided a valuable learning experience overall as I was continuously evaluated and received expert instruction from Mr Thanos Tsirikos. I am thankful to the whole team for providing me with this opportunity to enhance my knowledge and skills in spine surgery which will ultimately lead to better patient outcomes."
